Animal Assisted Intervention (AAI)
Interventions of therapeutic, rehabilitative, educational and recreational value that require the
involvement of domestic animals that can relate with men. The animals to be included in such
interventions have to follow a specific training course to acquire the skills and abilities necessary in
the relationship. These interventions are designed to promote improvement in physical, social,
emotional and/or cognitive aspects of the person(s) involved
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)
Interventions of therapeutic and/or rehabilitative value designed to cure the disorders in the
physical, social, emotional and/or cognitive aspects of the person(s) involved. AAT requires the
involvement of a multidisciplinary team made up of people with specialized expertise and purposetrained
and an animal-handler couple.
Animal Assisted Education (AAE)
Interventions of educational and/or re educational value, addressed to both healthy and disabled
subjects and to people affected by behaviour disorder. AAE requires the involvement of a
multidisciplinary team made up of people with specialized expertise and purpose-trained and in
which the animal-handler couple is an integral part.
Animal Assisted Activity (AAA)
Interventions of recreational value, conducted on a more occasional basis, addressed to both healthy
and disabled subjects, without specific objectives, aimed at improving the quality of life.
Project Prescriptive Team (PPT):
coordinates the Operational Team in the definition of the
project objectives, the implementation modality and evaluation of results. The people in charge of
the PPE is an expert doctor, a psychologist and a psychotherapist.
Operational Team (OT)
is made of a person with specialized expertise and purpose-trained and an animal handler. Such
equipe implements the project developed by the PPE according to the objectives of the project.
Veterinarian expert in AAIcollaborates with the project manager in choosing the kind of animal and the pair animal handleranimal.
He/she evaluates the health and behaviour requirements of the animal chosen and is in
charge of the wealth, health and correct management of the animal involved in AAI.
